What it means
Friction element C inside the automatic transmission has reached over-temperature.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Friction element C is an internal transmission clutch or other friction device that engages to transmit engine power in particular operating conditions. The transmission control module monitors its temperature, directly or through calculated data, and sets P270C when element C exceeds its allowed temperature.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Excessive slip due to worn clutch or low pressure
- Restricted transmission fluid cooler
- Sustained heavy load such as trailer towing
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and transmission temperature with a scan tool, noting vehicle speed, load, and whether the code followed towing or prolonged heavy driving.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle’s specified procedure; low or degraded fluid can reduce pressure and increase slip at friction element C.
- Inspect the transmission cooler and its lines for leaks, damage, or restricted airflow that could prevent heat from leaving the fluid.
- Review live data for element C temperature, commanded gear, and slip or pressure information, comparing readings with the manufacturer’s specifications.
- If overheating recurs under light load, have the hydraulic pressure and element C operation tested for internal leakage or clutch wear.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level with the specified fluid if it is low and address any leak.
- Remove an external obstruction from the cooler or repair a damaged cooler line.
- Repair a restricted transmission cooler.
- Repair internal hydraulic leakage or replace worn friction element C components as confirmed by testing.
Can I keep driving?
Stop towing and avoid steep climbs, heavy acceleration, or continued driving if the transmission is slipping or the warning persists; overheating can quickly damage friction element C and other transmission parts. If drive is lost or shifts become unpredictable, stop safely and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
