OBD-II fault code

P26F9: Coolant Pump C Control Module Overtemperature

What it means

The smart controller of the third coolant pump has reached over-temperature. Sustained high duty or insufficient cooling air flow around the pump electronics.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Coolant Pump C has an integrated control module that regulates the pump and monitors its own temperature. This code sets when that electronics module overheats, which can occur after sustained high pump demand or when debris blocks airflow around it.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sustained high duty cycle from cooling demand
  2. Cooling air channel around pump blocked by debris

Symptoms

  • Engine or powertrain warning light may come on
  • Temperature warning may appear if the affected cooling loop overheats
  • Cooling performance may be reduced in the affected system

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review live data for Pump C demand, operating time, and reported module temperature if available.
  2. After the vehicle and pump have cooled, inspect the air path around Pump C's electronics for leaves, dirt, or other blockage.
  3. Check that the pump is mounted as intended and that nearby components or debris are not trapping heat around its control module.
  4. Review whether the fault occurs during sustained high cooling demand, and compare pump operation with the manufacturer's diagnostic guidance.
  5. If airflow is clear but the module continues to overheat under normal conditions, test the pump and its control electronics as specified by the manufacturer.

Common fixes

  • Clear debris blocking airflow around the Pump C control module.
  • Correct an installation or obstruction that traps heat around the pump electronics.
  • Replace the pump assembly if its integrated control module overheats despite proper airflow and operation.

Can I keep driving?

If a temperature warning appears or the affected loop is not cooling, stop driving and let the vehicle cool; reduced pump operation can lead to overheating. If temperatures remain normal, limit trips and monitor for warnings.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
