What it means
The smart coolant pump module reports the system voltage below operating range. Pump output is reduced or disabled to protect the module.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The smart coolant pump's integrated control module needs adequate system voltage to run the pump. P26D0 specifically means the module has detected voltage below its operating range, which can reduce or disable pump output.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Weak battery sags voltage under load
- Alternator output below regulation point
Symptoms
- Check-engine light may be on
- Engine temperature may rise
- Cooling-system warning or reduced-power message may appear
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame data and live readings to compare pump-module voltage with battery voltage when the low-voltage fault occurs.
- Inspect the battery terminals, pump supply connections, and ground points for looseness, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
- Test the battery under load, especially if the fault appears during startup or when electrical loads are active.
- Check alternator output under load against the manufacturer's specification to find weak charging.
- Measure voltage drop across the pump-module supply and ground paths while the pump is commanded on to locate excess resistance.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose battery and pump-module connections.
- Repair a high-resistance supply or ground connection.
- Replace a battery that fails a load test.
- Repair the charging system if alternator output is below specification.
Can I keep driving?
The pump may run slowly or stop, so avoid driving if temperature rises or a cooling warning appears. Stop safely if the engine overheats to prevent engine damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
