P26C3: Internal Control Module Transmission Range Sensor Performance

What it means

The internal transmission range sensor inside the control module (used for redundancy on shift-by-wire systems) does not match the external sensor reading.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

In shift-by-wire transmissions, the transmission control module uses an internal range reading as a cross-check against the external sensor that reports the selected gear. P26C3 sets when those readings disagree beyond the module’s allowed range, which can happen as either sensor drifts with age.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Internal sensor drift
  2. External range sensor drift
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan the transmission module for related codes and review freeze-frame data to see which gear was selected when the disagreement occurred.
  2. Compare the internal and external range readings in live data while selecting each gear with the vehicle safely secured.
  3. Inspect the external range sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or loose connections that could distort its reading.
  4. Check whether the external sensor reading changes smoothly and consistently through the gear positions.
  5. Have the internal range reading and external sensor checked against the manufacturer’s specifications to identify which one has drifted.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged external range sensor connection.
  • Replace a faulty external transmission range sensor.
  • Replace or repair the control module if its internal range sensor is confirmed out of calibration.

Can I keep driving?

If shifts are harsh, delayed, missing, or the transmission enters a fixed gear, avoid driving and arrange service; an incorrect gear reading can affect vehicle control and worsen transmission wear. If it shifts normally, limit driving to a short trip for diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
