What it means
The controller detects voltage below the expected range in the fuel supply heater control circuit. This code concerns the fuel heater, not an oxygen sensor heater.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The fuel supply heater circuit powers the heater at the diesel filter or supply line so cold fuel is less likely to wax and restrict flow. The control module monitors the circuit voltage while controlling the heater. P2688 means that voltage is lower than expected, which can result from a control wire short to ground, a shorted relay coil, or resistance at a corroded connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to ground
- Relay coil short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Hard starting in cold weather
- Poor running in cold weather
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame temperature and starting conditions to see whether the low-voltage fault coincided with cold-weather heater use.
- Inspect the fuel heater control wire and relay wiring for chafing or contact with ground, and check connector pins for corrosion or poor fit.
- Use a scan tool to compare heater command and circuit feedback, if available, and confirm whether the module continues to see low voltage when the heater is commanded.
- Test the relay coil and control wire for a short to ground using the manufacturer's circuit procedure.
- Measure voltage drop across suspect connector contacts and check the circuit against the manufacturer's specification before replacing parts.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded fuel heater connector pins.
- Repair a control wire shorted to ground or damaged insulation.
- Replace a relay with a shorted coil.
- Repair a high-resistance connection and clear the code to confirm normal circuit voltage.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine is running normally, limit driving in cold weather and avoid journeys where a stall would be hazardous. The heater may not warm the fuel, allowing wax to restrict flow and cause hard starting or poor running.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
