OBD-II fault code

P2635: Fuel Pump A Low Flow / Performance

What it means

The ECU detects insufficient fuel flow from fuel pump A. Either the pump is worn out, the supply line is restricted, or the pressure regulator does not allow proper flow.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Fuel Pump A is the primary pump stage named by the vehicle's fuel-system configuration, and the module evaluates whether it delivers the required fuel flow or pressure. P2635 sets when Pump A's delivery is below the expected performance, which can result from a worn pump, restricted filter, or regulator fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Worn fuel pump
  2. Clogged fuel filter
  3. Pressure regulator fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
  • Power loss especially at high load or rpm
  • Possible long cranking time

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live fuel-pressure or flow data during the conditions that set the code, along with related fuel-trim codes.
  2. Inspect Pump A wiring, fuel lines, and accessible filter connections for leaks, damage, loose connectors, or restrictions.
  3. Check the fuel filter and any serviceable strainer for blockage, following the vehicle's service information.
  4. Measure fuel pressure and delivery with the specified test procedure at idle and under the conditions needed to reproduce the fault.
  5. If Pump A supply is inadequate, test the pressure regulator and pump electrical supply against the manufacturer's specification before replacing parts.

Common fixes

  • Replace a restricted serviceable fuel filter or strainer.
  • Repair a leaking or restricted fuel line or faulty electrical connection to Pump A.
  • Replace the pressure regulator if testing confirms it is failing to maintain delivery.
  • Replace Pump A if pressure or flow remains below specification with sound wiring and an unrestricted supply.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration, towing, and high-speed driving because low Pump A flow can cause power loss or stalling under load. If it stalls, is difficult to start, or enters reduced-power operation, stop driving and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
