OBD-II fault code

P260D: PTO Engaged Lamp Control Circuit

What it means

The dashboard PTO engaged lamp control circuit is faulty. Driver may not see whether the PTO is currently driving an external accessory.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The PTO engaged lamp circuit operates the dashboard indicator that tells the driver the reported PTO state. The controller monitors the lamp-control circuit and sets P260D when that circuit has an electrical fault. The lamp may stay off, stay on, or behave erratically, leaving the driver without a dependable visual indication of PTO status.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Burnt-out indicator bulb
  2. Open or shorted wire between cluster and ECU

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • PTO engaged lamp may stay off, stay on, or behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Check scan-tool PTO status against the dashboard lamp behavior to determine whether the fault is limited to the indicator circuit.
  2. Inspect the lamp, cluster connections, and wiring between the cluster and controller for damage, loose plugs, or corrosion.
  3. If the vehicle has a replaceable bulb, check it and its socket; otherwise follow the manufacturer's cluster lamp test procedure.
  4. Test the lamp-control wire for opens or shorts using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the wiring and lamp pass, verify controller command and cluster response with scan-tool or manufacturer-guided tests.

Common fixes

  • Replace a failed PTO indicator bulb where serviceable.
  • Clean and secure the cluster or controller connector.
  • Repair an open or shorted wire in the PTO lamp circuit.
  • Repair the cluster lamp circuit if it fails the manufacturer's test.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally possible if the PTO is not in use, but you may not be able to tell from the dashboard whether it is engaged. Verify PTO status through the vehicle's approved controls before operating or servicing connected equipment.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
