OBD-II fault code

P2609: Intake Air Heater System Performance

What it means

The intake air heater system did not perform within the expected range. The code alone does not identify a specific failed component or temperature feedback path.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The intake air heater system warms incoming air on diesel engines to help with cold starting. The controller evaluates overall heater-system performance, including whether electrical supply and temperature feedback are plausible, and sets P2609 when the result falls outside its expected range. A weak battery feed or an intake air temperature reading that is offset can make the system appear ineffective.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. High-resistance battery feed to the heater
  2. Intake air temperature sensor reads with offset

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Longer cranking or hard starting in cold weather
  • Rough running or increased exhaust smoke after a cold start

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare intake-air, coolant, and ambient temperatures to identify whether the temperature readings are plausible for the conditions.
  2. Inspect the heater power feed, ground connections, fuse links, connectors, and wiring for looseness, corrosion, or heat damage.
  3. Check battery condition and measure voltage drop in the heater supply circuit while the heater is commanded, following the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Compare intake air temperature sensor readings with a known cold-soak condition and inspect its connector and wiring.
  5. Use scan-tool data and the manufacturer's heater-system test procedure to confirm whether commanded operation produces the expected temperature response.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a corroded heater power or ground connection.
  • Repair high-resistance or damaged wiring in the heater supply circuit.
  • Replace the intake air temperature sensor if its readings are confirmed inaccurate.
  • Repair or replace the heater component that fails the manufacturer's performance test.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may be drivable if it runs normally, but cold starting, smoke, and fuel use can worsen, and the fault may affect emissions. Avoid repeated cold-start use until the system is checked.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
