OBD-II fault code

P25A3: Engine Hood Open

What it means

After plausibility checks the body controller has concluded that the engine hood is genuinely open while the vehicle is operating. Used to suspend HV operation on hybrids/EVs (HV interlock), block remote engine start, and trigger the alarm if armed.

How it works

The hood latch switch or sensor reports whether the engine hood is closed, allowing body and powertrain systems to apply safety and security rules. This code sets when the vehicle's controller concludes after its plausibility checks that the hood is open while the vehicle is operating.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Hood not properly latched
  2. Failed hood latch sensor

Symptoms

  • Hood-open warning or dashboard message
  • Remote start may be unavailable
  • Alarm may sound or fail to arm

How to diagnose it

  1. Check the dashboard hood-open message and confirm that the hood is fully lowered and latched.
  2. Inspect the hood latch and striker for debris, damage, or misalignment that could prevent secure closure.
  3. Inspect the latch sensor connector and nearby wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
  4. Watch the hood-ajar status on a scan tool while opening and closing the hood to see whether the status changes consistently.
  5. Test the latch sensor and its circuit according to the manufacturer's specification if the status remains incorrect.

Common fixes

  • Close the hood fully and confirm that the latch engages.
  • Remove debris or correct hood striker and latch alignment.
  • Repair the latch sensor connector or wiring.
  • Replace a faulty hood latch sensor or latch assembly.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive until the hood is securely latched; a hood that opens while moving can obstruct your view. Remote start or hybrid high-voltage operation may also be disabled while the vehicle reports the hood open.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
