OBD-II fault code

P2583: Cruise Control Front Distance Range Sensor Single Sensor or Center

What it means

General fault on the radar/lidar/camera distance-range sensor used by adaptive cruise control. On systems with a single sensor or three sensors with a center unit, this code refers to the central sensor — without it, ACC distance control is disabled and the system falls back to plain cruise.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Adaptive cruise control uses a forward-facing radar, camera, lidar, or a combination of sensors to estimate the distance to traffic ahead. The control module monitors the single distance sensor or the center sensor in a multi-sensor setup, and sets this code when it detects a fault with that sensor. Distance keeping may be disabled while ordinary cruise control remains available.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Dirty sensor surface (radar emblem / camera lens)
  2. Sensor misaligned after a frontal impact
  3. Failed sensor module

Symptoms

  • Adaptive cruise control unavailable or disabled
  • Cruise control may operate without distance keeping
  • Check-engine or driver-assistance warning light may come on

How to diagnose it

  1. Check the freeze-frame and driver-assistance status data to see when the center distance sensor fault was recorded and whether adaptive cruise was disabled.
  2. Clean the radar cover or camera lens and check for mud, ice, stickers, or damage that could obstruct the sensor.
  3. Inspect the center sensor and its mount for looseness, impact damage, or misalignment, especially after a front-end repair or collision.
  4. Check the sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or a loose connection.
  5. Use the vehicle's diagnostic data and manufacturer procedure to verify sensor operation and alignment before replacing the sensor.

Common fixes

  • Clean the sensor cover or camera lens.
  • Repair a loose or damaged sensor mount and restore its alignment.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector contacts.
  • Replace a failed center distance sensor and calibrate it as specified by the manufacturer.

Can I keep driving?

You can use ordinary cruise control only if the vehicle confirms that it is operating without adaptive distance control; leave extra space and be ready to brake yourself. Do not rely on the car to slow for traffic, and have the sensor checked if its warning persists.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
