OBD-II fault code

P257F: Engine Hood Switch Circuit High

What it means

The hood switch input reads stuck high — short to battery voltage or open switch return. The body controller cannot detect when the hood is opened.

How it works

The engine hood switch input tells the vehicle controller when the hood has been opened. This code sets when the input stays higher than expected, so the controller may fail to recognise an open hood; a short to power, poor connection, or open return can cause that condition.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Switch wire shorted to battery voltage
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light or hood warning, if equipped
  • Hood-open status may not register when the hood is opened
  • Alarm or remote-start operation may be affected, depending on vehicle

How to diagnose it

  1. Monitor live hood-status data while opening and closing the hood to verify whether the controller detects the change.
  2. Inspect the hood switch, striker, connector, and harness for misalignment, corrosion, or pinched insulation near a power source.
  3. Use the wiring diagram to check the switch signal for a short to battery voltage and inspect the return path for an open.
  4. Test the connector terminals for secure contact while monitoring the input, since a poor connection can mimic a high signal.
  5. If the wiring and connections are intact, test the switch and controller input against the manufacturer’s specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair a switch wire shorted to battery voltage.
  • Restore an open or poor switch return connection.
  • Replace damaged or corroded connector terminals.
  • Replace the hood switch if it fails to change state correctly.

Can I keep driving?

The engine will usually remain driveable, but the vehicle may not register that the hood is open, affecting warnings, alarm operation, or remote start. Check that the hood is fully latched before setting off and avoid relying on remote start until the switch input works correctly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
