What it means
Coolant level sensor signal voltage below the lower limit — short to ground or internal short. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The engine coolant level sensor or switch sends a signal from the expansion tank to the ECM. P2558 sets when that signal falls below the circuit's expected range, which can make the ECM interpret the level input as low or faulty even if the tank level is normal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check-engine light or coolant-level warning, if equipped
- Low-coolant warning may stay on or appear intermittently
How to diagnose it
- With the engine cold, check the expansion-tank level and record freeze-frame data to distinguish an actual low level from an electrical fault.
- Check live coolant-level data, if available, and see whether the warning stays on while the coolant level is visibly correct.
- Inspect the sensor connector and harness for moisture, corrosion, pin push-back, or insulation chafed through to ground.
- Gently move the harness near the tank while watching the live reading to locate an intermittent short or poor contact.
- Use the wiring diagram to test the signal for a short to ground and check the sensor circuit against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Top up coolant only if the cold level is actually low, and investigate any leak.
- Repair chafed coolant-level signal wiring that is shorting to ground.
- Clean and secure the sensor connector or repair damaged terminals.
- Repair an open or high-resistance connection in the circuit.
- Replace a failed level sensor or switch after verifying the wiring.
Can I keep driving?
Check the coolant level manually with the engine cold, since the warning may stay on or appear intermittently. Stop if the engine overheats or the coolant is low; continuing can cause serious engine damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
