OBD-II fault code

P2541: Low Pressure Fuel System Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

The low-pressure fuel system sensor circuit signal is below the expected limit. The code does not identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The low-pressure fuel system sensor sends a signal the control module uses to assess fuel pressure on the low-pressure side. P2541 sets when that signal falls below the expected limit; a low reading can come from sensor drift or a circuit problem, and may also accompany restricted fuel delivery.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor drift
  2. Clogged fuel filter
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine warning light
  • Hard starting or extended cranking
  • Hesitation, reduced power, or stalling

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live low-pressure fuel readings during key-on, cranking, and running to confirm when the signal is low.
  2. Inspect the low-pressure sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, poor contact, or damage that could pull the signal down.
  3. Check sensor power, ground, and signal circuits against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. Compare the reported pressure with an appropriate independent pressure test to distinguish a low signal from genuinely low fuel pressure.
  5. If actual pressure is low, check the fuel filter and delivery system; if pressure is normal, test the sensor for drift or an aged sensing element.

Common fixes

  • Repair poor connections or damaged wiring at the low-pressure sensor.
  • Replace a restricted fuel filter if testing confirms it is clogged.
  • Replace the low-pressure sensor if its output is below specification despite correct power, ground, and actual pressure.
  • Repair the fuel-delivery fault if independent testing confirms genuinely low pressure.

Can I keep driving?

If starting is difficult or the engine hesitates, loses power, or stalls, limit driving and avoid situations where loss of power could be dangerous. Low fuel pressure can worsen drivability and cause the engine to stop.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
