What it means
The ignition switch run/start-position circuit signal is below the expected limit. The code does not establish the switch state or resulting behavior.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The ignition switch sends a run/start signal to the receiving module when the key or start control is in Run or Start. P2534 means the monitored signal is below the expected limit, which can result from a grounded wire, resistive connection, or another circuit fault; it does not by itself prove the switch is in either position.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- On/Start wire shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check-engine or electrical-system warning light
- Engine may not crank or may start intermittently
- Run/start accessories may not operate
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and note whether the low signal was recorded during key-on, cranking, or while the engine was running.
- Use scan-tool data to compare the reported run/start state with the selected key position and check for related low-voltage or communication faults.
- Inspect the On/Start wiring and connector pins for corrosion, loose fits, and insulation chafed through to ground.
- Measure the run/start signal and check for a short to ground or excessive resistance, using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- If the circuit wiring is sound, test the ignition-switch output and receiving module input under the conditions that set the code.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose run/start connector pins.
- Repair insulation damage or a run/start wire shorted to ground.
- Repair an open or high-resistance connection in the On/Start circuit.
- Replace the ignition switch or repair the receiving module circuit only if testing identifies it as the source of the low signal.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may fail to crank, start intermittently, or lose run/start functions, and could stall if the signal drops while driving. Avoid driving if it stalls or the electrical system becomes unreliable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
