OBD-II fault code

P24E0: Reductant Purge Control Valve B Stuck Closed

What it means

The control module detected that reductant purge control valve B is stuck closed. The code does not establish the effects on a particular vehicle’s purge process.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Reductant purge control valve B helps clear AdBlue/DEF from the injector and lines during shutdown. P24E0 sets when the control module detects that valve B remains closed when the commanded operation calls for it to open; it does not by itself determine how the vehicle's purge process is affected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Valve stuck closed
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related reductant or NOx codes to see when valve B was expected to operate.
  2. Inspect the valve B connector and wiring for loose contacts, corrosion, or damage that could prevent an opening command.
  3. Check the valve and accessible passages for debris or deposits that could bind it shut, following the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Use a supported scan-tool actuator test, if available, to confirm whether valve B responds to an opening command.
  5. If power, wiring, and passages are sound, test valve B's actuator and movement against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure the valve B connector and repair any damaged wiring.
  • Remove contamination from the valve or passage if allowed by the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Free a sticking valve B actuator if the unit is serviceable.
  • Replace reductant purge control valve B if it remains closed during the specified test.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may remain driveable, but the valve may not carry out the required purge and emissions warnings or a no-start countdown can follow. Follow any countdown warning and arrange diagnosis without delay.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
