OBD-II fault code

P24C8: Particulate Matter Sensor Temperature Circuit Low

What it means

Same as P24C6 with the signal voltage below the plausible range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The PM sensor’s temperature element reports whether the sensor is hot enough for soot measurement after regeneration. This code sets when the temperature-circuit signal falls below the plausible electrical range, commonly because the signal is shorted to ground or the circuit has a poor connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Particulate matter sensor or aftertreatment warning
  • Emissions inspection failure

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame and live data to confirm the PM-sensor temperature signal is low while the fault is present.
  2. Inspect the temperature-circuit harness and connector for chafing, water intrusion, corrosion, pushed-back pins, or contact with the exhaust.
  3. With the circuit active, gently move the harness near the sensor and connector while watching live data for a change that localizes an intermittent short or poor contact.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to check the signal circuit for a short to ground and inspect connector terminals for corrosion or poor contact.
  5. If the wiring and connector pass, test the PM sensor’s temperature circuit against the manufacturer’s specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair a chafed signal wire shorted to ground.
  • Clean or repair corroded, wet, or pushed-back connector terminals and restore the seal.
  • Secure or reroute the harness to prevent renewed chafing.
  • Replace the PM sensor if its temperature circuit remains below range with sound wiring.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually drive cautiously if there are no other warnings or drivability problems, but the PM-sensor or aftertreatment warning may persist and emissions monitoring can be affected. Have the short or connection fault repaired soon.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
