OBD-II fault code

P24C4: EGR Cooler Bypass Position Sensor Exceeded Learning Limit Bank 1

What it means

The bypass valve position sensor learning has reached its software-side limit on bank 1 - typically heavy soot deposits have shifted the mechanical zero beyond the design adaptation range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The EGR cooler bypass valve on bank 1 changes whether exhaust gas passes through the cooler, and its position sensor reports the valve's position to the control module. P24C4 sets when the learned position reaches the software adaptation limit, often because soot or mechanical binding has shifted the valve's usable range.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Carbon or soot restricting the bypass valve
  2. Bypass valve sticking or binding
  3. Position sensor or wiring fault
  4. Mechanical wear in the valve or linkage

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Pinging or knocking under load
  • Power loss and hesitation
  • Possible rough idle
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review bank 1 EGR bypass position and command data to see whether the reported position is near the learned limit.
  2. Inspect the bank 1 bypass valve, linkage, connector, and wiring for soot-related sticking, mechanical damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  3. Use a supported scan-tool test to compare commanded and reported bank 1 bypass positions through the available movement range.
  4. Check whether the valve or linkage binds and inspect for soot deposits using the manufacturer's service procedure.
  5. If movement is free and wiring is sound, test the bank 1 position sensor and perform any specified relearn only after correcting the underlying fault.

Common fixes

  • Clean soot deposits from the bank 1 bypass valve where the service procedure allows.
  • Repair binding or damaged linkage in the bank 1 bypass mechanism.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a loose position-sensor connector.
  • Replace a failed bank 1 position sensor or bypass valve as confirmed by testing.
  • Carry out the manufacturer's relearn procedure after the mechanical or electrical repair.

Can I keep driving?

Driving may be possible, but hesitation, knocking under load, or power loss can worsen if the bank 1 EGR cooler bypass does not operate correctly. Avoid heavy acceleration when symptoms occur and arrange prompt diagnosis if knocking is persistent.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
