OBD-II fault code

P24BE: Evaporative Emission System Leak Detection Pump Switching Valve Control Circuit Low

What it means

Same as P24BD with the control line shorted to ground. The evaporative system captures fuel vapor from the tank and purges it into intake; leaks or stuck purge valves leak hydrocarbons and cause emissions failures.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The leak detection pump switching valve directs pump flow through the EVAP test or reference path when commanded by the control module. P24BE sets when the control line is held low, such as by a short to ground, and the module cannot drive the valve as expected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control line shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible smell of fuel near tank or engine bay
  • Failed emissions inspection
  • Loose-cap warning may appear

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check related EVAP codes to see whether the fault appeared while the module was commanding the switching valve.
  2. Inspect the valve connector and control wire for chafing, crushed insulation, corrosion, or contact with grounded metal.
  3. Check connector pin fit and look for corrosion or contamination that could interfere with the control circuit.
  4. Following the wiring diagram, test the control wire for a short to ground and check for continuity between the module and valve.
  5. If the harness passes, test the switching valve and module control output using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair control-wire insulation chafed through to ground.
  • Clean or replace corroded or poorly fitting connector terminals.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector sections in the valve control circuit.
  • Replace the switching valve if it fails electrical testing.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle will usually remain driveable, though the EVAP leak test may not run correctly and an emissions inspection may fail. Investigate promptly if fuel vapour odor is strong or persistent.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
