What it means
The dedicated coolant pump for the EGR cooler has an open control circuit - the pump cannot run, EGR cooler temperature rises beyond the safety threshold.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The EGR cooler coolant pump circulates coolant through the cooler to carry heat away from exhaust gas before it enters the EGR system. The control module monitors the pump's control circuit and sets P24A7 when that circuit is open, so it cannot reliably command the pump to run. Without coolant circulation, the EGR cooler can overheat.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in pump or wiring
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
- Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Pinging or knocking under load
- Power loss and hesitation
- Possible rough idle
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and check whether the module commanded the EGR cooler pump when the fault occurred.
- Inspect the pump connector for a pushed-back pin, corrosion, loose fit, or damaged wiring, since a poor connection can interrupt the control circuit.
- Check the harness between the pump and control module for breaks, chafing, or heat damage.
- With the circuit tested according to the manufacturer's procedure, check for continuity through the wiring and pump and verify the relevant power and ground feeds.
- If the wiring and pump check out, test the control-module output and inspect for an internal connection fault, such as a cracked solder joint.
Common fixes
- Reconnect the pump plug and secure any loose terminals.
- Repair an open or heat-damaged section of pump wiring.
- Replace a connector terminal that is pushed back or corroded.
- Replace the EGR cooler coolant pump if its circuit is open internally.
- Repair or replace the control module if its pump driver has an internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid heavy loads and prolonged driving until pump operation is restored, because the EGR cooler may overheat and engine performance or emissions may worsen. Stop if knocking becomes pronounced or the engine overheats.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
