What it means
During particulate-filter regeneration, exhaust temperature on Bank 2 is above the calibrated range. The code does not by itself establish that the filter is at risk of melting.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The DPF captures soot, which the engine control module burns off by raising exhaust temperature during regeneration. P244F sets when the monitored Bank 2 exhaust temperature exceeds the calibrated range during that process.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Excessive soot loading causing high regeneration temperatures
- Faulty exhaust temperature sensor or wiring
- Fuel dosing or regeneration control fault
- Restricted exhaust flow
Symptoms
- Check engine light or DPF warning light on
- Power loss / limp mode
- Increased fuel consumption
- Failed forced regeneration attempts
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame data and regeneration status to confirm the high reading occurred during a Bank 2 regeneration.
- Compare live Bank 2 exhaust temperature readings with other exhaust temperature sensors and check for a sudden or implausible spike.
- Inspect the Bank 2 temperature sensor, connector, and wiring for heat damage, corrosion, or a loose connection.
- Check DPF pressure and soot-load data for excessive soot or restricted exhaust flow.
- If the temperature signal and exhaust flow look plausible, investigate fuel dosing and regeneration control using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged Bank 2 sensor wiring or connector pins.
- Replace a faulty Bank 2 exhaust temperature sensor.
- Correct a fuel-dosing or regeneration-control fault.
- Address excessive soot loading or restricted exhaust flow after confirming the cause.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid repeated forced regeneration attempts while Bank 2 temperature is reading too high, and limit driving if power drops or a DPF warning appears. Failed regeneration can worsen soot buildup; this code alone does not establish that the filter is at risk of melting.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
