OBD-II fault code

P23CF: Fuel Heater Control Module Feedback Signal Circuit Low

What it means

Same as P23CD with the feedback voltage below the plausible range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The fuel heater control module sends heater-status feedback to the engine control module. P23CF sets when the feedback signal falls below its plausible range, which can happen if the feedback wire is shorted to ground or its connection is poor.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Feedback line shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Fuel or powertrain warning light, if equipped
  • Hard starting or rough running in cold weather
  • Reduced engine performance in cold conditions

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check the heater command and feedback reading while the fault is active.
  2. Inspect the feedback harness for chafing, especially where it passes brackets or other grounded metal.
  3. Check the fuel heater control module and engine control module connectors for water, corrosion, loose pins, or terminals pushed back into the housing.
  4. Move the feedback harness gently while watching live data to see whether the low reading changes.
  5. Test the feedback wire for a short to ground and check its continuity and connections against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair feedback wiring that is chafed through and contacting ground.
  • Clean or replace corroded, wet, or pushed-back connector terminals.
  • Repair an open or high-resistance section of the feedback harness.
  • Replace the fuel heater control module only if the feedback circuit and wiring pass their tests.

Can I keep driving?

The low feedback signal can prevent the engine control module from confirming heater operation, so cold starts and cold-weather running may become difficult. If symptoms are limited to cold conditions, avoid relying on the vehicle in freezing weather until the circuit is repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
