What it means
Exhaust Heat Exchanger Bypass Valve B Control Performance: the component is electrically intact but its response does not match the command.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Bypass valve B routes exhaust through or around the exhaust heat exchanger, and its actuator moves the valve in response to module commands. P23A5 means the electrical circuit may be intact, but the module detects that valve B's movement or position does not match the requested response.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Bypass valve B sticking from soot or deposits
- Actuator or linkage fault
- Position sensor or wiring fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Exhaust heat exchanger may not respond as commanded
- Possible change in exhaust heat management
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare live data for valve B's commanded position and position feedback to see how they differ.
- With the exhaust cool, inspect valve B and its linkage for soot, deposits, damage, or anything that could restrict movement.
- Check the valve B connector and wiring, including position-sensor wiring, for loose terminals, corrosion, or damage.
- If supported, command valve B through its range with a scan tool and observe whether the valve and feedback respond smoothly.
- Test the actuator, linkage, and position sensor using the manufacturer's procedure if the visual and scan-tool checks do not identify the fault.
Common fixes
- Remove deposits that are restricting valve B, if the manufacturer's service procedure permits cleaning.
- Repair damaged wiring or connector terminals for valve B or its position sensor.
- Repair or replace a faulty valve B linkage.
- Replace the actuator or position sensor if testing identifies it as faulty.
- Replace bypass valve B if it sticks or fails its movement test.
Can I keep driving?
A short trip may be possible if the vehicle runs normally, but avoid heavy loads until valve B's response is restored because exhaust heat management may be affected. Stop if performance or exhaust warnings worsen.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
