OBD-II fault code

P237C: Exhaust Heat Exchanger Exhaust Bypass Valve A Control Circuit/Open

What it means

Exhaust Heat Exchanger Bypass Valve A Control Circuit Open: the control circuit is open. Likely a broken wire, disconnected connector, or failed actuator.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Exhaust heat exchanger bypass valve A controls whether exhaust is routed through or around the heat exchanger. The control module monitors the valve actuator's electrical circuit. This code sets when that circuit is open, for example from a broken wire, a disconnected connector, a backed-out pin, or an open actuator winding.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in harness or connector
  2. Actuator solenoid or motor winding open
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power
  • Poor acceleration
  • Increased exhaust heat

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check for related exhaust heat exchanger or actuator codes that may help identify when valve A stopped responding.
  2. With the exhaust cool, inspect valve A's connector and harness for disconnection, broken wires, heat damage, or backed-out pins.
  3. Check the connector terminals for corrosion, looseness, or poor contact, and verify that the connector locks securely.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to check continuity through the valve A control circuit and its return path, following the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the harness and connections pass, test the actuator winding and module control output to locate the open circuit.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure the valve A connector or terminal.
  • Repair an open or heat-damaged section of the valve A harness.
  • Replace a terminal that is pushed back, corroded, or unable to maintain contact.
  • Replace the valve A actuator if its winding is open.
  • Repair the control circuit connection at the module if testing identifies an open there.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if power is reduced or exhaust heat rises, and avoid heavy loads or prolonged high-speed driving. Continued use with the bypass valve inoperative may worsen heat management.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
