What it means
O2 Sensor Out of Range During Deceleration Bank 1 Sensor 2: the control module has detected this fault condition. (Code P232F)
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Bank 1 sensor 2 is the oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter on the engine bank containing cylinder 1. During deceleration, the control module checks whether this downstream sensor’s signal stays within an expected range as exhaust oxygen changes. P232F indicates the signal went outside that range, which can result from a slow sensor, an exhaust leak near the sensor, or a wiring fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor element slow or aged
- Exhaust leak between catalyst and sensor
- Sensor wiring high resistance or chafed
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Possible rough idle or hesitation
- Failed emissions test
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review the operating conditions around deceleration, then compare bank 1 sensor 2 live data with the upstream sensor and the opposite bank if fitted.
- Inspect the downstream sensor connector and harness for chafing, heat damage, corrosion, or poor contact.
- Check the exhaust between the catalytic converter and bank 1 sensor 2 for leaks that could admit outside air.
- Observe the sensor response during a controlled deceleration using a scan tool and compare its behavior with manufacturer service information.
- If the exhaust and wiring are sound, test the sensor and its circuit according to the manufacturer’s procedure before replacing it.
Common fixes
- Repair a leak in the exhaust section near bank 1 sensor 2.
- Repair chafed wiring or corroded terminals in the downstream sensor circuit.
- Replace bank 1 sensor 2 if its response remains out of range and it fails the specified test.
- Clear the code and confirm the deceleration monitor completes after repairs.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may remain drivable if it runs normally, but arrange diagnosis soon because emissions can rise and it may fail an emissions test. Stop if rough running or loss of power becomes severe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
