OBD-II fault code

P232C: Cylinder 11 Fuel Injector A Offset Learning At Max Limit

What it means

Cylinder 11 Fuel Injector A Offset Learning At Max Limit: the control module has detected this fault condition. This affects fueling of the associated cylinders.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Injector A for cylinder 11 meters fuel into that cylinder, while the control module learns an offset to account for injector behavior. P232C sets when the learned offset reaches its upper limit, indicating that the controller is compensating as far as allowed for excess fuel delivery or an injector response outside its expected range. An injector that leaks internally or past its seat can cause this condition.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Injector leaks internally or seat leaking
  2. Injector aged - flow rate has drifted high

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Misfire or rough idle on the affected cylinder
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible fuel smell or smoke from exhaust

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review cylinder 11 misfire counts, fuel trims, and injector correction data for signs of an over-fueling condition.
  2. Inspect injector A’s connector and wiring for damage or poor contact that could disrupt its control.
  3. Check for fuel odor, smoke, or a fuel-wet spark plug at cylinder 11, taking care to avoid ignition sources around any fuel leak.
  4. Compare injector A’s electrical response with the other injectors and the manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If the circuit is sound, perform the specified injector leak-down or balance test to determine whether injector A or its seat is leaking.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, damaged, or corroded connection at cylinder 11 injector A.
  • Replace injector A if testing confirms internal leakage or excessive flow.
  • Repair the injector seat or sealing fault if the specified test identifies leakage there.
  • Replace a fuel-fouled spark plug after the cause of over-fueling is corrected.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid unnecessary driving if cylinder 11 is misfiring, the exhaust smokes, or fuel odor is present; excess fuel can damage the catalytic converter and may dilute engine oil. Stop safely if the misfire is severe or the check-engine light flashes.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
