OBD-II fault code

P229C: Fuel Pressure Regulator B Exceeded Learning Limits - Too Low

What it means

Fuel Pressure Regulator B Exceeded Learning Limits - Too Low: the adaptive learning value has reached its lower limit, so the ECU can no longer compensate. This controls fuel-rail pressure.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Fuel pressure regulator B adjusts fuel-rail pressure to meet the control module's target. This code sets when the module's learned correction reaches its lower limit, indicating that it can no longer compensate for pressure that remains too low.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fuel pressure regulator B unable to maintain pressure
  2. Weak or worn fuel pump
  3. Restricted fuel supply
  4. Fuel pressure sensor or wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
  • Power loss especially at high load or rpm
  • Possible long cranking time

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and compare commanded with measured rail pressure, especially during cranking and high load.
  2. Inspect regulator B, its connector, and wiring for damage or poor connections.
  3. Check the fuel supply path for restrictions that could starve the rail.
  4. Use scan-tool data to see whether rail pressure follows the target as regulator B is commanded.
  5. If supply and regulator checks do not explain the low pressure, test pump performance, the pressure-sensor signal, and related wiring against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring or a poor connector at regulator B or the pressure sensor.
  • Clear a restriction in the fuel supply.
  • Replace a faulty fuel pressure sensor if its signal is inaccurate.
  • Replace regulator B if it cannot maintain the commanded pressure.
  • Replace a weak fuel pump if testing confirms inadequate delivery.

Can I keep driving?

Keep driving to a minimum and avoid high-load acceleration, where low fuel pressure can cause power loss or stalling. A worsening fault may make the engine hard to start or leave it unable to run.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
