What it means
The control module detects an implausible relationship between brake pedal and accelerator pedal positions. The code does not by itself establish that the vehicle will force the engine to idle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The control module compares the brake-pedal position signal with the accelerator-pedal position signal to check that the two inputs make sense together. P2299 sets when the module sees an implausible relationship, such as the brake input appearing active while the accelerator input calls for acceleration; it does not alone prove the engine will be forced to idle.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Brake light switch stuck on
- Accelerator pedal sensor drift
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Reduced engine power or limited acceleration
- Accelerator response may be restricted while braking
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live brake and accelerator pedal position signals to see which input appears implausible.
- Check that the brake lights turn off when the pedal is released and inspect the brake-light switch for sticking or misadjustment.
- Inspect the accelerator pedal sensor connector and wiring for looseness, damage, or corrosion.
- Compare both accelerator-pedal position signals and the brake switch status while slowly operating each pedal, following scan-tool guidance for the vehicle.
- If the signals remain inconsistent, test the brake switch and accelerator pedal sensor circuits against the manufacturer's specifications.
Common fixes
- Adjust or replace a brake-light switch that remains on with the pedal released.
- Repair loose or damaged wiring at the brake switch or accelerator pedal sensor.
- Replace the accelerator pedal sensor assembly if its signal fails the specified test.
- Clear the code and confirm the pedal signals agree during a controlled road test.
Can I keep driving?
Because acceleration may be limited or restricted while braking, drive only if brake lights and pedal response work normally, and avoid overtaking or merging into fast traffic. Stop if the accelerator response becomes unpredictable or braking lights remain on.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
