What it means
The ECU detects an excessive intake restriction. Either the air filter is heavily clogged or an obstruction in the intake duct is reducing airflow below the expected level.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The intake system supplies filtered air to the engine, and the control module checks whether airflow is consistent with engine demand. P2280 sets when airflow appears restricted, commonly because the air filter is clogged or an object is blocking the intake duct.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Clogged air filter element
- Foreign object in intake
Symptoms
- Check-engine light may illuminate
- Reduced engine power, especially under acceleration
- Sluggish acceleration
- Unusual intake noise
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and airflow readings to note whether the restriction appears mainly under acceleration or across operating conditions.
- Inspect the air filter for heavy dirt, damage, incorrect fit, or debris covering its surface.
- Check the intake snorkel and duct from the filter housing for leaves, nesting material, or another obstruction.
- Look for a collapsed or damaged duct that could restrict airflow when the engine draws more air.
- If the filter and intake are clear, compare airflow data with expected values and test the airflow sensor circuit to the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Replace a clogged air filter with the correct type.
- Remove foreign material from the intake duct or filter housing.
- Refit a mis-seated filter or airbox cover.
- Repair a collapsed or damaged intake duct.
- Repair or replace an airflow sensor only if testing identifies it as the cause.
Can I keep driving?
You can generally drive gently if the engine runs smoothly, but avoid high engine load and hard acceleration while airflow is restricted. A severe restriction can cause power loss and may increase fuel use.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
