OBD-II fault code

P2263: Turbo/Super Charger Boost System Performance

What it means

Boost pressure does not match the requested target during normal operation. The deviation between commanded and measured boost exceeds the calibrated tolerance, often due to leaks, sticking actuators or sensor errors.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The boost system uses the turbocharger or supercharger, its controls, and pressure sensing to deliver the requested intake pressure. The module sets P2263 when actual boost repeatedly differs from the target beyond its allowed range, which can result from a charge-air leak, sticking variable-geometry vanes, or an inaccurate pressure reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Charge-air leak
  2. VNT vanes sticking with soot
  3. Boost pressure sensor drift

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Significant power loss / limp mode
  • Possible blue or black smoke from exhaust
  • Whistling or hissing sound from intake

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame and live data to compare commanded and measured boost across the conditions that set the code.
  2. Inspect charge-air hoses, intercooler joints, and clamps for leaks, splits, or loose connections.
  3. Check the boost pressure sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or a loose fit.
  4. Observe actuator and vane response with a scan tool if supported, looking for sticking or a mismatch between command and movement.
  5. Test the pressure sensor and boost controls against the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure before replacing components.

Common fixes

  • Tighten or replace leaking charge-air hoses and connections.
  • Repair damaged boost pressure sensor wiring or connector terminals.
  • Clean or repair sticking variable-geometry turbo vanes when confirmed by inspection.
  • Replace a boost pressure sensor only if testing confirms its reading is inaccurate.

Can I keep driving?

Power may drop sharply or the engine may enter limp mode, so avoid hard acceleration, towing, and situations where full power is needed. Continued driving with smoke or abnormal turbo noise can worsen damage; stop if symptoms become severe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
