OBD-II fault code

P224C: Alternative Fuel Tank Shutoff Valve A Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The control circuit for alternative-fuel tank shutoff valve A is open or has excessive resistance. This can prevent the valve from operating and may affect use of the alternative-fuel system.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Alternative-fuel tank shutoff valve A controls fuel flow from the alternative-fuel tank when the system needs to isolate it. The control module monitors the valve’s electrical circuit and sets this code when it detects an open circuit or excessive resistance that can prevent the valve from operating.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid winding open
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Alternative-fuel system may not operate

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to check freeze-frame data and alternative-fuel system codes for when valve A’s circuit fault occurred.
  2. Inspect valve A’s connector for a pushed-back pin, corrosion, looseness, or damage, and check the harness for breaks or chafing.
  3. Use the wiring diagram to identify valve A’s control and supply wires, then check continuity through the circuit for an open or high resistance.
  4. Measure the valve solenoid winding resistance using the manufacturer’s procedure and compare it with the manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If the valve and wiring test correctly, check the relevant module or sensor connections and internal circuit as directed by the manufacturer.

Common fixes

  • Seat a pushed-back connector pin and secure the valve A connector.
  • Clean corroded terminals or repair a damaged wire or poor connection in the valve A circuit.
  • Replace valve A if its solenoid winding is open or outside specification.
  • Repair a confirmed cracked solder joint in the responsible module or sensor.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle can run on another fuel, you may be able to drive using that system, but alternative-fuel operation may be unavailable. Do not rely on the alternative-fuel system until the shutoff valve circuit is working.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
