What it means
Fuel control system B on bank 1 has detected a lean condition at higher load. The code identifies the operating condition and fuel control system; it does not establish a turbocharger or charge-air system.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Fuel control system B manages mixture correction for bank 1. The module evaluates mixture feedback when engine load is higher and sets P21FC when it detects too little fuel relative to the air entering that bank; the code does not by itself point to a turbo or charge-air fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fuel pressure drops under load
- Charge-air leak after turbo
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rough idle, possible stalling
- Hesitation or hard cold start
- Power loss under load
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and fuel trims to confirm the event occurred under higher load and identify whether bank 1 alone shows lean correction.
- Inspect bank 1 intake plumbing and any applicable charge-air hoses for loose joints, splits, or leaks that could admit unmetered air.
- Compare bank 1 and bank 2 mixture sensor readings and fuel trims during a controlled load increase to see whether the lean response is bank-specific.
- Measure fuel pressure during load using the vehicle’s approved procedure and compare it with the manufacturer’s specification, since a static idle check can miss a pressure drop.
- If pressure holds, test bank 1 injector delivery and inspect the air-fuel or oxygen sensor circuit for a biased reading.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or replace a split intake or charge-air hose leaking after the airflow measurement point.
- Replace a restricted fuel filter or repair a weak fuel supply component if pressure falls under load.
- Clean or replace an under-delivering bank 1 injector.
- Repair bank 1 sensor wiring or replace a sensor only after confirming its reading is inaccurate.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing, steep climbs, and hard acceleration because the lean condition can cause hesitation, power loss, or stalling under load. If it misfires or loses power significantly, stop driving and have it checked.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
