OBD-II fault code

P215F: Reductant Heater D Current Too High

What it means

The control module detects excessive current in reductant heater D's circuit while the heater is commanded on. It sets the code when measured current exceeds the calibrated limit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Reductant heater D warms DEF (AdBlue) to help it flow in cold conditions. The module monitors current in heater D's circuit while it is commanded on; P215F sets when that current exceeds the calibrated limit, indicating a possible shorted heater element or wiring.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Reductant heater D element shorted
  2. Shorted or damaged heater wiring
  3. Faulty heater control circuit

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and reductant-system live data to confirm heater D was commanded on when excessive current was recorded.
  2. Inspect heater D's harness and connector for melted insulation, pinched wires, corrosion, or evidence of a short.
  3. Check the heater D element and circuit for a short or out-of-range resistance using the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Test the heater control circuit for a short to power or ground, following the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the element and wiring test correctly, check the control device or module output for unintended current.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or shorted wiring in the heater D circuit.
  • Clean and secure the heater D connector if poor contact or contamination is found.
  • Replace heater D if its element is confirmed shorted.
  • Repair the confirmed heater control circuit or module fault.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may drive normally at first, but the DEF system can trigger a warning or emissions-related no-start countdown, and emissions compliance may be affected. Follow any displayed countdown and have the short investigated promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
