What it means
The vehicle speed signal computed from VSS does not match the wheel-speed signal from ABS within tolerance. One of the two sources is wrong, or there is a tyre-size mismatch.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The powertrain control module compares vehicle speed from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) with speed calculated from the ABS wheel-speed sensors. P215A sets when those sources disagree beyond the allowed tolerance, which can happen with an incorrect tyre size or a speed signal that is inaccurate.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Tyre size mismatch versus calibration
- One sensor drifts or fails
Symptoms
- Speedometer may read inaccurately or fluctuate
- ABS or traction-control warning light may come on
- Cruise control may not work
- Transmission shifting may be affected
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to review freeze-frame data and compare VSS vehicle speed with each ABS wheel-speed reading under the recorded conditions.
- Check that all tyres are the specified size and are similarly worn, since a size mismatch can create a persistent speed difference.
- Inspect the VSS and wheel-speed sensor wiring, connectors, and nearby tone rings or encoders for damage, corrosion, or debris.
- With the vehicle driven safely or wheels rotated as appropriate, graph the VSS and individual wheel speeds to find which signal drops out or disagrees.
- Test the suspect sensor and its circuit against the manufacturer's specification, then check calibration or driveline issues if both signals appear plausible.
Common fixes
- Fit tyres of the correct specified size and match sizes across the axle as required.
- Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor connectors.
- Repair damaged wiring to the VSS or affected wheel-speed sensor.
- Replace the sensor or repair the tone ring/encoder identified by signal testing.
- Correct speed calibration if tyre or vehicle configuration has changed.
Can I keep driving?
If the speedometer is inaccurate or ABS/traction-control warnings are on, drive cautiously and allow extra stopping distance; those driver aids or cruise control may be unavailable. Avoid relying on cruise control until the speed signals agree.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
