What it means
The drive circuit of the EGR vent solenoid is open — the solenoid releases vacuum from the EGR actuator. Open circuit means the EGR cannot reset its position.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The EGR vent solenoid releases vacuum from the EGR actuator so the valve can return toward its reset position. The control module monitors the solenoid's drive circuit for continuity; an open circuit means it cannot energize the vent solenoid as commanded, potentially leaving EGR position control unreliable.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid winding open
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
- Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Pinging or knocking under load
- Power loss and hesitation
- Possible rough idle
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check related EGR codes and live data to see whether the fault coincides with incorrect EGR position or flow.
- Inspect the vent solenoid connector for a pushed-back pin, corrosion, looseness, or damaged wiring.
- Check the harness for an open between the control module and vent solenoid, following the manufacturer's circuit isolation procedure.
- Measure the solenoid winding for continuity and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring and solenoid pass, test the module output and any relevant internal connections using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect a loose plug or repair a pushed-back connector pin at the EGR vent solenoid.
- Repair an open or broken wire in the vent solenoid circuit.
- Replace the vent solenoid if its winding is open.
- Repair a confirmed cracked internal solder connection or failed module output according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Can I keep driving?
Gentle driving may be possible if the engine runs normally, but avoid heavy loads if it pings, hesitates, or loses power. The EGR system may not reset correctly, raising emissions and causing rough operation.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
