OBD-II fault code

P213A: Exhaust Gas Recirculation Throttle Control Circuit B/Open

What it means

The drive circuit of EGR throttle B is open. EGR throttles partially close intake to increase exhaust gas recirculation flow at low loads.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

EGR throttle B is an intake restriction actuator used on some engines to help increase exhaust-gas recirculation flow. P213A sets when the control module detects an open in the B actuator drive circuit, so the actuator may not move when commanded and NOx emissions can rise.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or broken actuator winding
  2. Damaged wiring or poor connector contact
  3. Failed EGR throttle actuator
  4. Fault in the control module or driver circuit

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Pinging or knocking under load
  • Power loss and hesitation
  • Possible rough idle
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related EGR or actuator codes; note the conditions when the B circuit fault occurred.
  2. Inspect the EGR throttle B connector and harness for disconnection, broken wires, corrosion, or damaged terminals.
  3. Using the wiring diagram, check continuity through the actuator drive circuit and check for an open actuator winding according to the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Check the module-controlled supply and return paths for the B actuator using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure; do not assume the actuator is faulty until the wiring is verified.
  5. If the circuit and actuator test correctly, investigate the control-module driver and its grounds as directed by the manufacturer.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure a loose EGR throttle B connector.
  • Repair broken wiring or corroded terminals in the B actuator drive circuit.
  • Replace the EGR throttle B actuator if its winding is open or it fails the manufacturer's test.
  • Repair a confirmed control-module driver fault after verifying the circuit and actuator.

Can I keep driving?

A short, gentle trip may be possible if the engine runs smoothly and throttle response is normal, but avoid heavy load if it knocks or loses power. The fault can impair EGR operation, increase NOx emissions, and cause rough running or further drivability problems.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
