OBD-II fault code

P2115: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor A Minimum Stop Performance

What it means

The minimum stop calibration of throttle position sensor A is outside the expected range during the ECU self-check. The signal at fully closed throttle does not match the stored reference, indicating a mechanical or sensor issue.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Throttle position sensor A reports the throttle plate’s position to the engine control module. P2115 sets when the module’s self-check finds sensor A’s reading at the fully closed minimum stop outside its learned range, which can result from a sticking plate or a failed sensor.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Throttle plate sticking due to carbon
  2. Internal sensor fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and check sensor A’s closed-throttle live reading and related throttle codes to see whether the fault occurs at rest or during movement.
  2. Inspect the throttle body for carbon that could hold the plate away from its closed stop, and check sensor A’s connector and wiring for damage or poor contact.
  3. With the ignition on and engine off, observe sensor A while the throttle moves through its range; look for a smooth signal and a closed-position reading consistent with the other position channels.
  4. Check sensor A’s reference, ground, and signal circuits against the manufacturer’s specification to distinguish a sensor fault from a wiring problem.
  5. If the plate moves freely and the circuits are sound, test the throttle actuator and follow the vehicle maker’s procedure for any required relearn.

Common fixes

  • Repair poor contact or damage in sensor A’s wiring or connector.
  • Clean carbon from the throttle plate and bore using the approved procedure.
  • Replace the throttle position sensor or throttle body if sensor A fails testing.
  • Repair the throttle actuator or complete the specified relearn if it cannot achieve the closed position.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced response or limp mode can make it difficult to accelerate safely; avoid high-speed roads and heavy traffic. Do not continue driving if the engine surges or throttle control becomes unreliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
