What it means
The module detects that the SCR NOx pre-catalyst on bank 1 has exceeded its allowed temperature threshold. It sets the code when measured or calculated pre-catalyst temperature is above the calibrated limit under monitor conditions.
How it works
The SCR pre-catalyst is the upstream NOx treatment stage in bank 1's exhaust aftertreatment system. The module monitors its temperature from an exhaust-temperature sensor or a calculated value. This code sets when the bank 1 pre-catalyst temperature remains above its calibrated limit during the monitor.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty exhaust temperature sensor
- Excessive engine or exhaust temperature
- Incorrect reductant dosing
- Exhaust restriction
- SCR pre-catalyst damage
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Reduced engine power
- Exhaust or emissions warning
- Poor fuel economy
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live temperature readings around the bank 1 pre-catalyst to establish when the over-temperature event occurred.
- Inspect the temperature sensor and wiring at the bank 1 pre-catalyst for heat damage, poor connections, or signs of exhaust leakage.
- Compare the sensor reading with other exhaust temperatures during warm-up and operation to check for an implausible high reading.
- Check for engine, DPF-regeneration, reductant-dosing, and exhaust-restriction faults that could raise pre-catalyst temperature.
- Inspect the bank 1 pre-catalyst and adjacent exhaust for restriction or heat damage, and check reductant delivery against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged wiring or a poor connection at the bank 1 pre-catalyst temperature sensor.
- Replace the temperature sensor if its reading is confirmed inaccurate.
- Correct the upstream engine, regeneration, or reductant-dosing fault causing excess exhaust heat.
- Repair an exhaust leak or restriction affecting the bank 1 pre-catalyst.
- Replace a confirmed damaged bank 1 SCR pre-catalyst.
Can I keep driving?
Keep loads light and avoid towing until the bank 1 pre-catalyst temperature fault is diagnosed, since continued overheating can damage the aftertreatment system. Stop if power drops sharply or an exhaust warning signals an urgent fault.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
