What it means
Manufacturer-specific variant of the reductant over-pressure condition. The pressure exceeds the upper threshold during a defined operating window; on some platforms used in addition to P20E2 to flag a different test path.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The reductant system pump builds DEF pressure in the supply circuit, while the return path and pressure sensor help the module regulate it. This code sets when pressure exceeds the upper limit during the monitored operating window; a blocked or frozen return path or a sensor reporting falsely high pressure can trigger it.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Return line blocked or frozen
- Pressure sensor reads high
Symptoms
- Check engine light or NOx warning on
- AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
- Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded and measured reductant pressure with a scan tool to confirm when the reading exceeds the expected range.
- Inspect the return line for kinks, blockage, freezing, damage, or DEF crystallization that could prevent pressure from relieving.
- Check the pressure sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, or damage.
- Compare the pressure sensor reading with system state and available scan-tool data to identify an implausible signal.
- Test the return path, sensor, and circuit according to the manufacturer’s procedures and specification, taking care around pressurized DEF.
- If the return path and sensor circuit pass, investigate pump regulation or a control-module fault using vehicle-specific service information.
Common fixes
- Clear a confirmed blockage or repair a kinked or damaged reductant return line.
- Thaw a frozen return line and check it for damage.
- Remove DEF crystallization using the manufacturer’s specified service method.
- Repair damaged pressure-sensor wiring or connector terminals.
- Replace a pressure sensor or pump component only when testing confirms it is faulty.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle runs normally, a short, cautious drive to diagnosis may be possible, but avoid heavy use and address the fault soon because reductant delivery and emissions control may be affected. Follow any DEF or starting-restriction warning; a countdown may eventually limit or prevent restarting.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
