P20A1: Reductant Purge Control Valve Performance

What it means

Reductant purge control valve A is electrically OK but does not vent the line within the expected time — partial blockage or weakened solenoid.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Reductant purge valve A vents the DEF delivery lines at shutdown so fluid can return toward the tank and avoid freeze damage. P20A1 sets when the valve's electrical circuit appears usable but the system does not detect the expected purging response in time.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Purge valve sticking or partially blocked by crystallized DEF
  2. Weak valve solenoid or restricted vent line
  3. Damaged or corroded connector or wiring

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and reductant-system status to see when the purge attempt failed and whether the valve was commanded.
  2. Inspect valve A, its connector, and the nearby harness for DEF crystals, corrosion, loose terminals, or damage.
  3. Use scan data or the manufacturer's output test to command purge valve A and observe whether the system's pressure response matches the expected pattern.
  4. Check the purge valve and vent path for crystallized DEF, sticking, or restriction that could delay pressure release.
  5. If the valve and path are clear, test the valve's operation and wiring under the manufacturer's procedure for an intermittent or weak response.

Common fixes

  • Remove a confirmed restriction or DEF crystal buildup from the purge valve or vent path using the manufacturer's service procedure.
  • Repair corroded connectors or damaged wiring at valve A.
  • Replace a sticking or weak purge valve A.
  • Repair a restricted vent line if it prevents the expected purge.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may remain drivable, but an ineffective shutdown purge can leave DEF in the lines and increase freeze-damage risk in cold weather. Arrange diagnosis soon, particularly before temperatures fall below freezing.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
