OBD-II fault code

P2098: Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Lean (Bank 2)

What it means

Bank 2 counterpart of P2096. The post-catalyst fuel trim correction on bank 2 has reached its lean limit, suggesting an exhaust leak after the bank 2 catalyst, a drifting downstream sensor, or a degraded catalyst.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The post-catalyst fuel-trim monitor uses the downstream oxygen sensor on bank 2 to assess exhaust oxygen after that bank's catalyst and adjust trim. P2098 sets when the bank 2 correction reaches its lean limit; an exhaust leak after the catalyst or a drifting sensor can mislead the monitor, and catalyst performance may also contribute.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Exhaust leak after bank 2 catalyst
  2. Bank 2 downstream sensor drifting

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Failed emissions inspection
  • Possibly slightly increased fuel consumption
  • Sulfur (rotten egg) smell from exhaust under load

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare bank 2 fuel trims and upstream and downstream oxygen-sensor readings with bank 1 to identify a bank-specific lean correction.
  2. Inspect exhaust joints after the bank 2 catalyst for leaks and check the bank 2 downstream sensor wiring and connector.
  3. Check for other engine or fuel-trim codes that might explain genuinely lean exhaust before focusing on the post-catalyst system.
  4. Review bank 2 downstream sensor response under the manufacturer's test conditions to see whether it tracks plausibly against the upstream sensor.
  5. If there is no leak and the sensor passes, evaluate bank 2 catalyst performance using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair an exhaust leak downstream of the bank 2 catalyst.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector faults at the bank 2 downstream oxygen sensor.
  • Replace the bank 2 downstream sensor if testing confirms it has drifted.
  • Correct any underlying engine condition causing genuinely lean exhaust.
  • Replace the bank 2 catalyst if testing confirms degraded performance.

Can I keep driving?

A gentle drive is generally possible if the engine runs normally, but arrange diagnosis soon because the fault can cause an emissions-test failure. Stop if the engine develops significant power loss or rough running.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
