OBD-II fault code

P2009: Intake Manifold Runner Control Solenoid Circuit Low (Bank 1)

What it means

The IMRC solenoid drive line for bank 1 reads below the lower threshold — short to ground or a failed driver stage. The runner cannot be switched on demand.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The bank 1 intake manifold runner control solenoid is operated by an electrical drive circuit that lets the module change intake airflow. The module monitors the circuit signal while commanding the solenoid. P2009 sets when the drive signal falls below its expected range, which can happen with a short to ground, an internally shorted solenoid, or a poor connection; the runner may not switch on demand.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Drive line shorted to ground
  2. Solenoid internally shorted
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
  • Hesitation, especially during acceleration

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live runner command data to see when the bank 1 circuit went low and whether the code returns with the solenoid commanded.
  2. Inspect the bank 1 solenoid connector and wiring for corrosion, damaged insulation, pinched wires, or a short to ground.
  3. Check connector terminals for corrosion or poor contact that could disrupt the solenoid drive circuit.
  4. Test the solenoid and its drive wiring for shorts or abnormal continuity using the manufacturer's procedure and compare readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the solenoid and wiring pass, follow the manufacturer's checks for the module driver before concluding it has failed.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed or pinched bank 1 solenoid wiring that is shorted to ground.
  • Clean, tighten, or repair corroded bank 1 connector terminals.
  • Replace a bank 1 solenoid confirmed internally shorted.
  • Repair the module driver circuit only after wiring and solenoid tests confirm the fault is there.

Can I keep driving?

A gentle, short drive may be possible if the engine runs smoothly, but reduced power or hesitation can affect acceleration. Avoid hard acceleration and have the electrical fault diagnosed soon; the runner may remain in its default position and emissions may rise.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
