What it means
The control module has detected particulate trap efficiency below the expected threshold on bank 2. This code does not by itself establish whether the filter is loaded, damaged, or affected by a sensor or leak.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The particulate trap on bank 2 captures soot from that bank's exhaust and must regenerate to burn accumulated soot away. The control module detects that bank 2 trap efficiency is below its threshold; P2003 alone does not show whether the trap is loaded, cracked, melted, or affected by a sensor or exhaust leak.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- DPF heavily loaded — repeated short trips prevent regeneration
- Filter substrate cracked or melted
Symptoms
- Check engine light or DPF warning light on
- Power loss / limp mode
- Increased fuel consumption
- Failed forced regeneration attempts
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related DPF, pressure-sensor, temperature-sensor, and regeneration codes before attempting a regeneration.
- Review bank 2 soot-load and regeneration history, along with differential-pressure data, to determine whether the trap is overloaded or failing to regenerate.
- Inspect bank 2 DPF pressure and temperature sensor wiring, connectors, and pressure hoses for damage, blockage, or leaks.
- Check the bank 2 exhaust joints and trap body for leaks or visible damage that could affect measured efficiency.
- If sensor and exhaust checks pass, assess the bank 2 trap substrate and follow the manufacturer's criteria before attempting or authorizing regeneration.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged pressure-sensor wiring, connectors, or blocked/leaking pressure hoses on bank 2.
- Repair exhaust leaks affecting the bank 2 trap readings.
- Correct the cause of incomplete regeneration and perform the manufacturer's specified regeneration if the trap is within its service limits.
- Replace the bank 2 particulate trap if it is cracked, melted, or too restricted for regeneration.
Can I keep driving?
Power may fall and the vehicle may enter limp mode; continued driving with a heavily loaded bank 2 trap can worsen restriction and damage the exhaust system. Avoid heavy loads and follow DPF warnings, especially if regeneration attempts fail.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
