What it means
The measured current in generator phase Z is lower than expected. The module sets this code when phase current remains below its calibrated threshold during monitoring.
How it works
The generator produces electrical power through three phases, and phase Z has its own current sensing and wiring. The hybrid control module compares the measured Z-phase current with its expected value during generator operation. It sets P0EDB when that current stays below the calibrated level, which can indicate a sensor, wiring, winding, or inverter problem.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty phase current sensor
- Open or high-resistance phase wiring
- Generator winding fault
- Inverter fault
Symptoms
- Hybrid system warning light
- Reduced power
- Reduced or unavailable regenerative braking
- Charging may be limited
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review generator command, speed, and phase-current readings to see when Z-phase current fell below expectation.
- Compare live Z-phase current with the other generator phases under the same operating conditions to confirm whether the discrepancy is isolated to phase Z.
- With the system made safe according to the vehicle service procedure, inspect phase Z wiring and connectors for damage, looseness, corrosion, or heat marks.
- Check the phase Z current sensor signal and its connections for an open, high resistance, or implausible reading, using the manufacturer's test procedure.
- If the sensor circuit checks out, have the generator windings and inverter evaluated for a phase-specific fault.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, damaged, or high-resistance phase Z connection.
- Repair or replace damaged phase Z wiring.
- Replace a confirmed faulty phase Z current sensor.
- Repair or replace the generator or inverter if testing confirms an internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and long trips if power or regenerative braking is reduced; charging may also be limited. Stop safely if the hybrid system warning is accompanied by severe power loss or other urgent warnings.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
