OBD-II fault code

P0E86: Battery Charger B Voltage Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the battery charger b voltage sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery charger B voltage sensor measures an electrical value used by the control module to manage charging. P0E86 sets when the reading is outside its expected range or does not respond as expected, even if the circuit is not simply open or shorted.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor characteristic drifted
  2. Sensor mounting displaced
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live charging data to see whether the sensor reading is consistently offset or changes implausibly during charging.
  2. Inspect the battery charger B voltage sensor mounting and connector for displacement, looseness, corrosion, or damage.
  3. Check the sensor wiring and terminals for resistance or connection problems that could distort its output.
  4. Compare the sensor reading with a direct measurement of the same circuit using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
  5. If the circuit and mounting are sound, test the sensor’s response against the manufacturer’s specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure the sensor and correct any displaced mounting.
  • Clean or repair poor connector contacts and wiring.
  • Replace the voltage sensor if its output has drifted outside specification.
  • Repair charger B if sensor readings remain abnormal with a verified sensor circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Charger B may charge slowly, stop, or be unavailable while this fault is active. Keep enough battery charge for your trip and avoid relying on this charger until the fault is diagnosed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
