What it means
The ECM detects that the engine failed to crank when commanded. Starter motor, power supply, or interlock fault.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The engine control module (ECM) monitors whether the engine begins turning after it requests a crank. P0E4E sets when the engine does not crank as expected, which can result from a weak 12-volt supply, a starter-system fault, or a crank interlock or control fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Starter or engine-cranking system fault
- Low 12-volt supply voltage
- Cranking interlock or control-circuit fault
Symptoms
- Engine may not start when commanded
- Hybrid/EV system warning light may turn on
How to diagnose it
- Check the scan-tool freeze-frame and hybrid-system data for 12-volt supply voltage and the ECM’s crank request at the time the fault occurred.
- Check the 12-volt battery condition and connections, since low supply voltage can prevent the starter system from operating.
- Inspect the starter-system wiring, grounds, and connectors for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
- Check whether a crank interlock is preventing the request, using the vehicle’s available status data and operating conditions.
- If supply and interlock checks pass, test the starter control circuit and starter system according to the manufacturer’s procedures.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure loose or corroded 12-volt battery connections.
- Charge or replace a 12-volt battery that fails the manufacturer’s condition test.
- Repair damaged starter wiring, grounds, or connectors.
- Repair a confirmed crank interlock or control-circuit fault.
- Replace a starter component only after testing confirms it has failed.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine will not crank, the vehicle may not start or may lose propulsion when shut down; avoid relying on it for a journey. If it starts and drives normally, limit driving and address the fault promptly because a repeat no-start may leave you stranded.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
