What it means
The HV battery coolant pump runs below the calibrated minimum speed. High mechanical resistance.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The high-voltage battery coolant pump circulates coolant to control battery temperature. The control module monitors pump speed, and P0E3C sets when speed falls below the calibrated minimum, indicating that the pump may be struggling against resistance, lacking supply, or reporting speed incorrectly.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Coolant pump motor or speed-sensing fault
- Restricted coolant flow or air in the circuit
- Low pump supply voltage
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live pump-speed and battery-temperature readings to establish when the pump falls below its expected operating range.
- Inspect the pump connector, wiring, and accessible coolant hoses for loose connections, damage, kinks, or leaks.
- Check coolant level and look for signs of restricted flow or air in the circuit, using the manufacturer’s service instructions.
- Measure pump supply and ground during commanded operation and compare the results with the manufacturer’s specification.
- If coolant flow and electrical supply are satisfactory, test the speed signal and pump operation using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged pump wiring or restore a loose or corroded connection.
- Correct low coolant or trapped air using the specified filling and bleeding procedure.
- Clear a confirmed coolant-flow restriction.
- Replace the pump if it cannot reach the specified speed with correct supply and flow.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid strenuous driving and charging if power is reduced or the hybrid/EV warning is on, since insufficient battery cooling can lead to further power limits or charging interruption. Stop if a battery-temperature warning appears and have the fault diagnosed promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
