What it means
The pedestrian alert (AVAS - Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System) control module reports a circuit/open condition. Acoustic warning at low speed for pedestrians may be impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The pedestrian alert control module operates the vehicle's low-speed acoustic warning system, which helps pedestrians notice a quiet hybrid or EV. The vehicle monitors the module circuit for an electrical connection. This code sets when that circuit is open, so the alert sound may not operate even though the vehicle can still drive normally.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in module control wire
- Module failed
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid/EV system warning light on
- Pedestrian alert sound may be absent or intermittent at low speeds
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check for related pedestrian-alert or hybrid-system codes to see whether the fault appeared with other electrical issues.
- At a safe standstill, check whether the pedestrian alert sound operates at low speed using the vehicle's normal operating conditions.
- Inspect the pedestrian alert module connector and nearby harness for damage, looseness, corrosion, or water intrusion.
- Check for a pushed-back pin or broken control wire at the module connector, since either can leave the circuit open.
- Test continuity and module power or ground connections using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and procedure before condemning the module.
Common fixes
- Seat the pedestrian alert module connector fully and secure its retainer.
- Repair a broken or disconnected module control wire.
- Repair damaged or corroded connector terminals.
- Replace the pedestrian alert control module if its wiring and connections test correctly but the open-circuit fault remains.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may remain drivable, but pedestrians may not hear it at low speeds, increasing the risk around car parks, crossings, and quiet streets. Drive slowly and cautiously in areas with pedestrians until the alert is working.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
