OBD-II fault code

P0D64: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Cooling Fan Enable Circuit/Open

What it means

The battery pack cooling fan enable circuit is open or has an open-circuit fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery pack cooling fan enable circuit carries the control signal that allows the high-voltage battery cooling fan system to operate. P0D64 sets when the module detects an open in that enable path, so it may be unable to command the fan as intended.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in enable wire
  2. Enable switch failed
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and related fan or battery temperature codes to establish when the enable-circuit fault occurred.
  2. Check live data for the fan enable command and battery cooling status, if available, to see whether the module is requesting operation.
  3. Inspect the enable wire and connector for breaks, loose connections, corrosion, or a terminal pushed back in the connector.
  4. Test continuity through the enable circuit and check its connectors using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specifications.
  5. If the wiring passes, test the enable switch or control input and the module output using the vehicle-specific procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reseat the enable-circuit connector and restore a backed-out terminal.
  • Repair an open or damaged enable wire.
  • Clean or replace corroded terminals in the fan enable circuit.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty enable switch or repair the control module circuit if testing identifies it.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving, especially in hot weather or under heavy load, because the battery cooling fan may not operate and the vehicle may restrict power or charging. Stop safely if a battery warning or reduced-power mode appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
