OBD-II fault code

P0CBC: Drive Motor A Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit

What it means

The control module detected a fault in the drive motor A coolant temperature sensor circuit. The reading may be unreliable; the resulting vehicle response depends on the vehicle.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The drive motor A coolant temperature sensor reports how warm the coolant around drive motor A is, helping the control module protect the motor from overheating. This code sets when the sensor circuit has a fault, so the module may not be able to trust that motor’s coolant temperature.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and drive motor A coolant temperature live data, then compare the reading with ambient conditions and other available temperature readings.
  2. With the vehicle powered down, inspect the drive motor A coolant temperature sensor connector and nearby harness for loose seating, corrosion, or damage.
  3. Check the sensor circuit for an open or short using the vehicle’s wiring information.
  4. Inspect the motor A cooling system for an obvious coolant leak or condition that could explain an abnormal temperature reading.
  5. If the wiring and connector are sound, test the drive motor A temperature sensor against the manufacturer’s specification and replace it if faulty.

Common fixes

  • Reseat the drive motor A coolant temperature sensor connector and clean or repair corroded terminals.
  • Repair damaged or open wiring in the motor A sensor circuit.
  • Replace the drive motor A coolant temperature sensor if it fails the manufacturer’s test.
  • Repair a coolant leak if inspection shows the motor A cooling circuit is low.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if the warning is accompanied by reduced motor power, since the vehicle may be unable to monitor drive motor A’s cooling condition reliably. Stop safely if power drops sharply, the vehicle warns of overheating, or it begins to shut down.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
