OBD-II fault code

P0CA4: Hybrid/EV Battery Charging Voltage High

What it means

The control module detected hybrid/EV battery charging voltage above its calibrated limit. The cause and protective response depend on the vehicle.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hybrid or EV battery management system monitors pack voltage during charging and coordinates the charger to keep the battery within its operating limits. This code sets when charging voltage rises above the calibrated limit, which can result from charger regulation, disagreement about the charge target, or an abnormal cell-group condition.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Charger regulation off
  2. BMS disagrees with charger setpoint
  3. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and note whether the code occurred during AC charging, DC fast charging, or regenerative charging.
  2. Use a scan tool to review battery charging voltage, commanded charge target, charger status, and any battery management or cell-balance faults.
  3. Inspect the charging connector and accessible charge-system connections for damage, overheating, contamination, or poor seating.
  4. Check whether cell-group voltage or balance data points to an abnormal pack condition, using the vehicle's service information.
  5. Test charger regulation and battery voltage sensing under the specified conditions, comparing readings with the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Stop charging and reseat the connector if inspection finds an incomplete or poor connection.
  • Repair damaged or overheated accessible charging-system wiring or connections.
  • Correct charger control or regulation faults confirmed by testing.
  • Address a confirmed battery sensing or cell-balance fault using the vehicle's approved service procedure.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue charging if the vehicle reports this fault; disconnect only as directed by the vehicle's charging instructions and avoid repeated charge attempts. Reduced power or protective shutdown may follow, so arrange prompt diagnosis and stop driving if the vehicle behaves abnormally.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
